Yeah — really stinks huh? I just had my first real head-first slam into death here, myself.

[He tries to keep his tone light, though there's some level of discontent behind the response; Peter's not really much for making light of half of the garbage this town pulls. ]

[He frowns at that, but doesn't push further. He's pretty sure the last thing she'd want to do during this meet-up is discuss her emotional state after being dead another time. Instead he just pours out a bag on the table with quite a number of different snacks.

He grabs a chip bag, pulls it open between pinched fingers, and eats a chip.]

Three visions of our past to charge them in the sleep. I'm sure you've gathered that much. There are doors in the national park now.

[She took up a bag of her own, something sweet, while she was talking, keeping her tone neutral and conversational. She wanted to make sure it was all nicely clear.]

They seem to be nothing, but take you to the outside of the lab on the mountain. Sodder's heart is there, massive, against the wall. If you cast two coins into the moat, it will wash you up and bring you into her heart.

[He nods, because he's gathered as much, yeah. He'd figured there was... some kind of information one could find within, but with everything that had been going on with the town lately, he'd found himself more likely to be rescuing people from hunters or monsters than being able to do any deep-digging of his own.]

Were you able to go in there yourself, then?

[It was so hard to investigate between the bouts of running for one's life. It really was. Sometimes she wondered how she found time at all.]

Twice. I had to confirm that I could. Once the fee is paid... you can still see the same visions, but other valves, other memories seem to be sealed. I went with Max first, and the Doctor since.

We haven't done public messages. The information? It wasn't pivotal. Neither vision will get us out or save sodder, and I didn't want to risk Mother Superior finding out a secret way inside of her. Her father had mentioned something about wanting into the Great Sleep, so we weren't sure if we should say anything publicly.

[She breathed in for a second and out.]

It's hard to know when to tell, who to tell. Still, at least one of the visions could be important on some level. Sodder... is extremely powerful, Peter.

[He nods.]

... I know she is.

I know she's — she's probably got more power than anything I've ever seen before. And I know that jerk-off of a father won't do anything to help her, not in the way she needs it; it was smart, to be careful about the Valves. About the Great Sleep.

... What was it? The one vision.

She was a girl. A monster had been chasing her, and she went to the police. Terrified. She asked them to find it, but it was clear that the policeman didn't believe her. I think he was confused, maybe nervous, but in the end he seemed to think it a child's fancies.

...When she left, it attacked her in the alley and a black alleycat scared it off, getting hurt in the process. Something snapped in her and she reached out. I saw power go forth, magic of incredible force, and it felt cold, different.

She made the Authority to do what she felt the police could not or would not. One for each policeman that failed her. Seeing her magic at work... she can make and unmake this reality with incredible force.

A monster... maybe one from another world, like the ones here.

[That would make sense. Maybe her powers were already drawing some of those beasts in...?]

Her power is definitely insane. I mean, we’re talking someone who has the power to draw people out of their dimensions. Making her own isn’t even a candle held up to that kind of power. The Authority might have been her first real attempt to create from nothing, though...

A distinct possibility. They had trouble believing them at first, it seems. I can't fault them too hard, but she felt betrayed.

It may have been one of the first steps in showing what that power looked like, in demonstrating it. She felt so cold, so alien, so bitter when she did what she did. It was hard to imagine... but it explains a lot o why they behave the way that they do.

They're here to do what the police could not, but in the end they're still cats deep down.

[He sighs softly.]

It's what happens when a child has too much power and not enough adults trying to genuinely help her.

Sadly, I believe that I understand you in this. She was left alone, or almost alone, for far too long. It makes me recall the vision I saw of the druids long before. Perhaps that was the curse of one not born under the moon as they'd hoped. She grew up alone.

She barely even understands her magic, does she?

Seems like it... and I doubt there were any people around her prior to Sleepers who could understand how that feels, to have abilities you don't completely understand. That's... one good thing, now. A silver lining, you know?

A lot of us get what that's like, to have a lot of power and nobody to talk to about it.

... I know I sure had a hard time, when I was younger.

Her mother may have known some, and she loved and relied on her I think, but there are limits to how much she knew. I believe her magic ran in her bloodline, though. Pity the rest of her coven were not here as well... as far as I know anyway.

Did you? Oh yes... this is about the costumed routine, isn't it? Powers such as yours, they are forbidden in your world in some way? I'm sorry. I'm so accustomed to magic being commonplace, and the loathing of my people being ... something of a thing of the past.

[It kind of helped that she was politically one of the most powerful people in five continents after the war. If she said 'stop fucking with the Onelthes, I killed the god of war so you'd be barely a road block' people were bound to listen these days. Even Harpies were finally getting better treatment now.]

I wouldn't be surprised, honestly, if her mother ended up appearing again in some way.

Using her own abilities to communicate, or to do something to help her daughter.

[But he lets them lull into an easier quiet for a moment, as he chews on a chocolate from his bag of goodies; when she asks about the costumed routine, he glances up, eyebrows raised, as if a little surprised it's being asked after.]

Oh... Oh, no, not... forbidden. But there's definitely very few people like me in my world. Compared to other worlds, anyway... I've only ever met people with powers like mine here in Deerington.

I kind of had to just figure it all out on my own, without being a 'freak' to the majority who didn't have any abilities.

Nor would I. I somehow doubt that she will do so until something major happens to force her to need to do so, but I would not be surprised at all.

[She took the rest in with a nod. He certainly seemed more or less comfortable with what he was.]

Mmmm, people do get nervous about what is different, do they not? I am a little curious, though... what are your abilities exactly?

Oh, you know. Usual weird radioactive-like spider-stuff. I can stick on any surface, and balance on just about anything... And I've got the proportional strength of a spider! Super tough. [He flexes his arm, which is never that buff-looking in his dorky flannel.] And I can sense danger coming.

... Which I gotta be honest, I don't know how that's a spider thing.

But it was a radioactive one, so. You know. Maybe it could.

[She laughed. 'usual' and 'radioactive' didn't go together well in her mind. But that was clear enough that she could piece it together.] That would make you quite the fighter if you're nimble enough about it. And with a proper forest you could be a terror of a hunter, like a spider.

...

Though, if I'm being honest...? [Another little laugh, this one self-deprecating.] I've read about radiation and all I can really get is 'poisonous light that you can't see that comes out of poisonous rocks.'

That description is 100% valid and true.

To be honest, the city I'm from is perfect for my powers. It's just... skyscrapers. Stories high, perfect for swinging between. [He taps his finger on the back of the webshooter on his wrist.] It's not a power, exactly, but I do have synthetic webs for travel.

[She chuckled. So, at least she was close.]

Oh, so you've managed to create webbing as well? You really do have something of a spider theme going, don't you? How effective is it? I have to hope it's stronger than the real thing.

Oh, it's pretty strong. I mean, strong enough to hold up... I don't know. Boats? Helicopters?

[He pauses in sugary mid-bite.]

... You're familiar with helicopters, right?

... I've seen pictures and they appeared in one of those movies I watch with Gwen. So, I know what they are. That's... incredibly strong, if they are indeed made of metal and capable of flight.

[She was legitimately a little impressed by that.]
